A lot of images are repeated throughout the mosaic as I only had 2000 images to work with and this uses 6000 images, but despite the repeating images the final mosaic turned out pretty good.

I meant to post "Holy Shit..." when I originally saw this yesterday.
But my internet froze up...regardless:
"Holy Shit...That's awesome."

I'll do the same thing after Portal 2 is released and fortunately there will be a lot more of the game to take screen captures of so the final mosaic will look better and won't need to repeat so many images.

This is awesome. I very rarely see mosaics where they actually use the natural pictures, rather than just altering the brightness/color

The other way to fake a mosaic is to simply overlay the smaller pictures over a larger picture and change the transfer mode so the larger image can be seen through the smaller ones.

I sent an e-mail to Gabe Newel about the Portal companion cube mosaic and his response back was:

"Nice!"

Wow incredible, I love how well textured the walls look. I'm sure that was a pain to get just right.

Not really. I have a plug-in for the Gimp that assembles the mosaic for me.

I play through the game with the gun model, GUI and croshair turned off while SnagIt takes a screen capture every two seconds. Without the crosshair it's sometimes difficult to aim properly, but you can eventually make it through the whole game fairly easily.
